Designing the Unexpected

Addressing A Grave Design Challenge
I never would have imagined designing a website for a place people are dying to get into. Recently, I had the opportunity to create an online experience from the ground up for Cedar Hill Cemetery. I am familiar with the area, as it is only an hour away from where I grew up in Connecticut. To my surprise, it turned out to be one of the most satisfying website design experiences I ever have had.

Plotting the Approach

The Cedar Hill Foundation provided rich assets which made my job easier. It hired a talented photographer to capture the essence of the landscape, showcase the cemetery as a beautiful vista in which to experience inspiring pieces of art. Beverly, the head of the design project, supplied hundreds of unique images to help reduce content clutter.

To my surprise, I learned that the cemetery has 30,000 notable “residents.” Many of them are famous —  John Pierpont Morgan, Sr, actress/Connecticut resident Katharine Hepburn and eminent English chemist Horace Wells who discovered anesthesia. Learning this made the design process more interesting than I initially predicted.

Enjoying the Process

Though this project was time consuming, it was well worth the time and effort. It was challenging in many ways from the content, to the functionality and design execution. Many valuable lessons and skills were learned along the way. Overall, it was truly an unforgettable project that made for a great story to tell.
